Potty Training

Day Training

There is no set rule for Potty Training as all children are different and made uniquely by God.

These are my Potty Training tips that I used when I was training my daughter. ( I give God all the glory)

There are two phases of Potty Training- Day and Night Time Training that your child will go through.

In order to successfully Potty Train:

  • One must be consistent

  • Be optimistic

  • Be patient

  • Have faith that it will happen and ask the Holy Spirit to help you along the way

The first step to Potty Training is to see if your child  is showing signs that he or she is ready. Does she take off her diaper when it is wet? Or Does he wake up with a dry diaper?

This is your sign that you can begin to Potty Train. That is what the experts say as this process should not be rushed. They have to be ready to do it.

You can get ready to buy the plastic Potty for your child to use. 😁 I started off with the plastic Potty and then I graduated with the toilet seat.

Let the child get accustomed to seeing you when you go to the bathroom to urinate. This will foster an interest in wanting to go to the bathroom on their own.

My daughter started to show signs that she wanted to Potty Train at 17 months old. This was after I successfully weaned her off the breast.

WHAT TO DO

However, I decided to wait until she was 20 months. This began in the month of March 2019.

I would allow her to see me going to the bathroom and I would show her videos on YouTube of children going to the Potty. By doing this, it encouraged her to want to follow the other children in the video.

I would show her that she is doing a good job with a high five every time she makes an attempt to use the Potty. You can give a reward for every time the child goes to the Potty on her own. This will encourage them to want to do it often.

In September 2019, when she was at the clinic for her check up, she told me that she wanted to use the bathroom. This was the first time she would use the bathroom in public.💪

This was very exciting for me as she was just 2 years old and 3 months.

Overall from March to September, her Day Training took 7 months for her to complete. She was fully trained at 2 years old and 5 months. After your child has mastered the hang of going to the Potty during the day then you can move on to Night Training.

Night Training

I started Night Training when my daughter was 3 years old. I got frustrated with buying diapers. I am sure some of you can relate.😆

I also ensured that I had a plastic covering on the mattress to protect it in case of any accidents.

During the day I would keep track of what she drinks and ensure that she doesn’t drink any liquids at least 2 hours before bed and ensure that she pees before bed.

I started Night Training in June 2020 and I would notice that she would wake up between midnight and 1 am to tell me that she wants to use the bathroom. I still allowed her to keep on her diapers during this time.

In November, I decided to allow her to sleep without a diaper and I noticed that she didn’t pee the bed when she woke up. I did the no diaper method consistently for 2-3 weeks to see what would happen.

Overall from June to November, the night training took 6 months to complete. By the ending of December she was completely Night Trained at 3 years old and 5 months.

My journey will be totally different from yours but don’t give up and give yourself grace for starting this journey. Remember to be consistent, be optimistic, be patient and have faith that it will happen.
